Dogs, Digestion & Enzymes – What a Dog Taught My Mom about Relieving Baby Colic

“Your brother Tom had a mean case of infant colic” mom reminded me. I groaned. The memory was all too fresh in my mind. There I was doing everything I could to calm my colicky red-faced baby brother, as he screamed his head off. I shuddered. History was repeating itself with my own little one now.

Then I remembered there had been a happy ending. “One day he just stopped crying all the time” I said aloud. “What happened?”

My mom started to tell me the story about her co-worker T.J. and his dog. Just as I was beginning to wonder what a dog had to do with my baby, she explained that my younger brother Tom’s Baby Colic was stopped cold in its tracks when she used T.J.’s method of improving his precious poochie’s health – the miracle of enzymes. Supposedly dogs and horses can get colic too.

T.J. discovered the amazing properties of enzymes while searching for a solution to his dog’s health problems. As it turns out, all creatures’ great and small with a digestive system also need and use enzymes. Click here to learn about the importance of enzymes in our diet.

To demonstrate, T.J. showed my mom an experiment. (You can try this at home once you have your own bottle of enzymes for kicks.)

Easy Enzyme Experiment – DO Try this at Home!

He set out two mason jars with fitting lids – Jar A and Jar B.

Put about ¼ cup of dog food and enough water to cover the dog food in each jar.

Add the powder contents of a small capsule of enzymes to Jar B.

Let the jars sit about 30 minutes.

While the jars sat, T.J. explained to my mom what enzymes are – exactly.

You Can Actually See How Enzymes Are Critical for Proper Digestion

Now my mom explained to me that mature healthy intestines are populated with good bacteria – “healthy flora”. The healthy flora makes it possible to digest the food and drink we put in our bodies. These little microscopic bacteria regulate the influx, assimilation and removal of food coming into the body.

“It just takes time for these friendly bacteria to populate the baby’s intestines. As long as he’s not exposed to severely stressful environmental conditions the good bacteria will eventually populate his intestines fully and he will do a better job digesting foods and drinks on his own as he gets older.”

Is Intestinal Misery the Reason for Your Baby’s Incessant Crying?

“Since the baby can’t yet use words to tell you about his pain, he screams and cries. Poor thing.”

“Poor ME,” I complained.

“Yes, poor mommy, too” my mom agreed.

“So – mom” I practically yelled, “Tell me there is a better way than waiting for the healthy bacteria to grow- I can’t live like this anymore! I need sleep! I need peace!”

And the Results Are…A Revelation in Mushy Dog Food

Mom continued. “T.J. and I looked at Jar A and Jar B about 30 minutes later. It was truly amazing – within 30 minutes the dog food in Jar B (with enzymes) was complete and total MUSH. The dog food in Jar A was slightly bloated but still had its original shape.”

“Aha!” I exclaimed. “I get it. The Digestive Enzymes helped to break down the food into smaller pieces faster so T.J.’s dog could digest the food better.”

“Bingo” said my mom. “The same principle applies to the baby, too. Actually, many adults also suffer from poor intestinal health. If it goes unchecked it eventually can result in serious disease — the most severe being colon cancer but starting with symptoms such as bloating, constipation, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, etc. By adding digestive enzymes to your diet you greatly relieve and very often eliminate the threat of the diseases that occur as a result of poor digestion.”

Mom wanted to be sure I understood: “You see, most all disease can be traced directly back to the stomach and the intestines. A healthy intestinal tract and good digestion is key to long lasting good health.”

Dear Reader, I beg of you, take that one to heart. That is the truth, Ruth!
