Baby Colic, Enzymes, Digestion & Nutritional Health

What is the cause of infant colic?

There is no commonly accepted explanation for colic. Traditionally, colic was ascribed to abdominal pain resulting from trapped gas in the digestive tract. This theory is not yet discredited, and some recent scientific evidence seems to support it, yet it is no longer universally accepted as the general cause. Some doctors claim that it is a combination of a baby’s sensitive temperament, the environment and his immature nervous system, which make him cry easily and then not being able to control it, while others believe that it originates in problems in the baby’s digestive system, specifically because of the build up of gas which can not be released. New studies at the Colic Clinic at Brown University demonstrate that nearly half of babies with colic have mild gastroesophageal reflux. It is also possible that some cases may be the result of lactose intolerance. (Wikipedia)

Everything You Wanted to Know About Enzymes!

Why do I or my baby need Digestive Enzymes?

Low energy, bloating, gas, indigestion, Baby Colic – all these problems and more can often be traced to the enzyme deficient modern diet and fast-paced lifestyle. Indigestion is the number on health complaint today, and digestive aids are the most popular drugs. Although fresh, raw foods are rich in enzymes, they do not supply the extra enzymes needed to help break down the processed foods we eat, as well as the environmental toxins and stresses we are bombarded with. This places a burden on our overworked digestive organs. As we age, the pancreas and other organs become less capable of producing the enzymes we require, and symptoms of poor absorption become more common, including low energy, bloating, increased gas, and deficiencies of vitamin B12, iron, folic acid, zinc, and other micronutrients. The simple, natural solution is to supplement with plant-based enzymes whenever we eat cooked foods.

How will digestive enzyme supplements help my baby and/or me?

Digestive enzymes “unlock” nutrients from the breastmilk, formula or the food we eat, so the nutrients can be absorbed and assimilated better. Enzymes break down food, breastmilk and formula into basic components which the body can use for building cells, tissues, and organs. This translates into fewer “energy lags” after nursing, feeding or eating, less bloating and gas, and more vital nutrients to build strong, healthy bodies.

How do I know which enzymes to choose, and how do I use them? What should I choose when I need extra digestive help?
